OESA and the Harbour-Felax Group announce the release of the study “Vendor Tooling: The Not So Missing Link,” on March 11, 2009, at the MSU Management Education Center, Troy, Mich. Offering in-depth analysis on current vendor tooling practices, as well as the culture shift necessary for OEMs and suppliers to collaborate effectively, the study sheds light on a new business model that will eliminate waste within product development, purchasing and manufacturing. Study analysis is based on previously-unseen data from six major OEMs. Participants may attend the meeting at the MSU Management Education Center or via live webinar. Ove Schuett, vice president CATIA – North America, Dassault Systemes, will open the meeting by sharing his perspective on the need for collaboration. Bob Gordon, partner, Clark Hill PLC, will describe the risks associated with tooling management during the various phases of the product lifecycle. Laurie Harbour-Felax, president, Harbour-Felax Group, will present study findings, collected from data spanning 2002 – 2007 representing over $1 billion in tooling expenditures. Data includes plastic molds, stamping dies and fixtures purchased by General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan and Honda. Coupled with informative and revealing statistics on these areas will be Harbour-Felax’s detailed analysis, garnered from more than 20 years of experience as an automotive industry analyst. She will cover current tooling practices that drive cost, complexity and extended product development – and the solutions required to significantly cut these costs. To support shifts ingrained in the automotive culture will be case studies on best-in-class tooling management, from cradle to grave.
Recently General Motors has adopted a cross-functional approach to vendor tooling, which changes the way GM will collaborate with suppliers to develop and procure tooling. Stuart Spiers, director of global cost engineering, General Motors Corporation, will describe the approach in detail, share what is needed and expected of suppliers, and highlight the benefit to all parties of the new business strategy.
The study focuses on four key areas:
- Product Development: Discover advantages of common body architecture and components, inefficiencies of high-cost design differences and quantity of engineering changes per OEM.
- Foreign Build Process: Learn the cost differences of tool production in China and India versus the U.S. and Canada, as well as modification of imports and pros/cons of overseas building.
- Purchasing: Identify significant differences in purchase order pricing versus fair market value, cost changes in quoting and production, and approval of different pricing for comparable tools within one company.
- Tool Location: Locate discrepancies in tool locations, payment for non-existent tooling, refusal of tool return and service tooling.
